What Monday’s All About

Labor Day weekend marks the perfect pause before the seasons begin to change – a moment to appreciate the dignity of all work and the gift of rest. It’s more than a day off; it’s a national “thank you” to everyone who builds, serves, creates, teaches, grows, drives, heals, and supports our communities each day. Rather than focusing on the struggles of the past, let’s look at what’s good about celebrating Labor Day today – and how we can make the most of the weekend ahead.

A Chance to Say Thank You – Labor Day can be viewed as a national pat on the back – a reminder to appreciate everyone from nurses to teachers, small business owners to big business leaders to local mail carriers and delivery drivers. It’s a time to say, “Your work matters” and we appreciate what you do.

Reflecting on Purpose – Labor Day is also a great time to reflect on how our work gives us purpose – whether it’s raising a family, building a career, finding time to volunteer, or pursuing a passion. I know for me, finding time to relax and do something fun clears my head and give me more clarity when I head back into the office and tackle you PIA (Pain in the @%$) Jobs!

The Unofficial Farewell to Summer – This weekend also gives us a joyful excuse to soak up the last rays of summer sunshine before the rhythms of fall return. In my small town where I live, the sounds of fall fill the night, as I can hear the marching band play at the football stadium.

I’m sure you have plans this weekend – Jackie and my focus is on family, the kids and grandkids – cookouts and playtime. Here are some easy ways enjoy the time together.

Host a Backyard BBQ or Potluck – Fire up the grill, invite your neighbors and/or family, and celebrate together — it’s the perfect time for simple joys and shared laughter.

Take a Local Mini Adventure – Explore your own town — visit a park, hike a trail, go to a local museum, or enjoy a small-town festival or street fair. Here in northeast Ohio we have the National Air Show, Oktoberfest, Ohio Art & Craft Festival, BBQ & Pizza festivals, Taco Fest, Parades, national parks, the zoo & aquarium and so much more.

Support Your Local Businesses – Spend your dollars in places that employ your neighbors. Grab ice cream from the corner shop, get coffee from a local café, visit a local restaurant or browse an independent bookstore. Be sure to say “thanks”

Go Screen-Free for a Day – Unplug and unwind. Play a board game, read a book, take a nap in a hammock, or just enjoy time outside. See how long you can go before picking up your phone!!

Write a Thank-You Note – Think of someone whose work has made your life better – a teacher, mechanic, grocery clerk – and write them a quick thank-you. You’d be surprised how much it means.

Rest Without Guilt (I love this one!)
It’s Labor Day – rest is the whole point! Sleep in, take a slow walk, or do nothing at all. You’ve earned it.
